Grays Harbor will soon be home to one of the largest biodiesel refineries in the nation, according to plans announced today by the parent company of Seattle Biodiesel.
The plant would produce up to 100 million gallons of biodiesel per year, the company said. That's more than 20 times the total amount of biodiesel made in the state now.
Seattle Biodiesel is currently the largest maker of the fuel in Washington, with a plant with a 5 million gallon capacity in Seattle.
Biodiesel is diesel fuel made from vegetable oil such as soybean oil.
The Grays Harbor project hinges on an agreement between Imperium Renewables, Seattle Biodiesel's parent company, and the Port of Grays Harbor.
Biodiesel is enjoying growing popularity as a cleaner, home-grown alternative to regular diesel. With the recent jump in fuel prices, it is now selling for less than regular diesel at Seattle-area stations.
The state Legislature this year also passed a law requiring that by 2008 all diesel sold in Washington each year must be 2 percent biodiesel.
Point taken with regards to timeline. However, I think I'd advocate something a little more crunched. I would want E85 fueling facilities statewide (at least 400) by the end of 2006. I would also want a minimum of 35% of all diesel powered vehicles running off of BioDiesel by the end of 2007. The sooner we can break our dependence upon petroleum products (how do we replace lube oil is the next question), the better.

Sounds reasonable, but also need to push at least 30% biodiesel content, not 2%.
That was the point of my pushing for 35% of ALL diesel vehicles running bio-diesel rather than the proposed two percent which is effectively of null effect. Bio-Diesel and E85 are the future of our country and we need to support it.
